ODI Bowler Rankings 2007 (all teams)

Saturday, January 26th, 2008

The ODI Bowler’s Ranking 2007 is out! in the second edition of Vineet’s Cricket Rankings (Check out the ODI Bowler Rankings 2006 here)! And there are lots of surprises here, but then there are some faces we discovered last year and they still maintain their ranking, proving that they were no flukes, and that includes Varaiya of Kenya! The biggest setback was that the bangladesh bowlers who did exceedingly well in 2006 are now languishing with only Syed Rasel remaining near his last year ranking. Instead Sri Lanka has 5 bowlers in Top 30 this time.

At the top of the heap is Fidel Edwards, who captures 14 wickets in the 6 matches he played at 11.28 apiece. And he spent a miserly 3.56 runs per over to land right on top. He emerged out of nowhere in 2006 to be at the top in 2007. That’s really an awesome talent to watch out for.

Even Ryan Sidebottom of England took 14 wickets in 6 matches at 15.85 apiece. And he spent a miserly 3.88 runs per over to land right on top at the second place.

No one can keep Muralitharan (Sri Lanka) out of the Top Bowlers List for long, and after being at 29th position last year, he is now at No.3 claiming 26 wickets in 13 matches at 14.46 apiece at a economy rate of 3.90. He is followed by Shane Bond (New Zealand) at number 4 (improved from number 9 last year) and Ongondo (Kenya) at number 5 (improved from number 20 last year). RN ten Doeschate (Netherlands) is back in the bowlers List as well at No. 12. He captured 23 wickets in 11 matches at 17.69 apiece at an economy rate of 4.87. Way to go!

ODI Batsmen Rankings 2007 (all teams)

Sunday, January 20th, 2008

Well January is back, and so is the second edition of Vineet’s Cricket Rankings (check out the ODI Batsmen Rankings 2006 here)! And though there are some surprises, the top of the heap is captured by none other than two of the most competitive cricketers of 21st century - Ricky Ponting followed by Matthew Hayden.

Ricky Ponting scored 1424 runs in 27 matches at an amazing average of 79.11 at a very high strike rate of 91.79!! He smashed 5 centuries and 8 half-centuries on the way to achieving this. Not to be left behind, Matthew Hayden scored 1601 runs in 32 matches at a very high average of 59.29 at a good strike rate of 89.19!! He smashed 5 centuries and 6 half-centuries on the way to achieving this.

Graeme Smith, Andrew Symonds and Sachin Tendulkar follow at 3,4 and 5. So the year 2007 was heavily dominated by Australian Batsmen, and the same way the Australian Team dominated the World Cricket.

Well, now for some surprises, Ten Doeschate remains in Top 20 (remember this site had picked him to be a player to watch last year). Shahid Afridi continued to dazzle with an annual strike rate of 161. A player like Haddin who has a position of No. 7 in the table continues to languish on the fringes of the Australian team (Does the Australian team also have a Seniorphilia like the Indians?). AB deVillers continued to be in the Top 10, a feat only Yuvraj could manage besides him. So we can certainly take deVillers and Yuvraj to be the players of the future!!
But the biggest surprise in Top 10 was DJ Reekers (Netherlands), and if you combine him and Doeschate you have a team to look out for - Netherlands!

Some surprises to watch for are LOB Cann (Bermuda), JM Davison (Canada), Robin Utthappa (India).

1 RT Ponting (Aus)
2 ML Hayden (Aus)
3 GC Smith (SA)
4 A Symonds (Aus)
5 SR Tendulkar (India)
6 Shahid Afridi (Pak)
7 BJ Haddin (Aus)
8 AB de Villiers (Afr/SA)
9 DJ Reekers (Neth)
10 Yuvraj Singh (Asia/India)
11 Mohammad Yousuf (Asia/Pak)
12 V Sehwag (Asia/India)
13 SB Styris (NZ)
14 Salman Butt (Pak)
15 LOB Cann (Ber)
16 AC Gilchrist (Aus)
17 HH Gibbs (SA)
18 S Chanderpaul (WI)
19 RN ten Doeschate (Neth)
20 JM Davison (Can)
21 RR Sarwan (WI)
22 Imran Nazir (Pak)
23 JH Kallis (SA)
24 MS Dhoni (Asia/India)
25 SR Watson (Aus)
26 KP Pietersen (Eng)
27 BC Lara (WI)
28 LPC Silva (SL)
29 S Matsikenyeri (Zim)
30 RV Uthappa (India)

Where are the top 5 batsmen of the year 2006?

Well RN Ten Doeschate whom this site had predicted as a hidden gem, continued his exciting run by remaining in Top 20. While Nathan Astle and Mark Trescothick faded into oblivion, Gilchrist continued to be a good bet, though Jayasuria was quite subdued this year.

40 ST Jayasuria (SL) (1)
19 RN Ten Doeschate (Neth) (2)
232 NJ Astle (NZ) (3)
retired ME Trescothick (ENG) (4)
16 AC Gilchrist (AUS) (5)

Probable Team Australia for Aus-Ind ODI Series 2008

Sunday, January 20th, 2008

Australia should recall Shane Watson after his injuries deflated his career after the world cup 2007. Shane Watson is to Australia what Irfan Pathan has come to mean for India (that’s another matter that Australia has a problem of plenty with Symonds and M Clarke also there)

Finally, the two good cricketers in waiting, Brad Hodge and Brad Haddin may be considered should Australia decide to make some changes.

Though the most predictable team seems to be the one that played New Zealand recently, but the CA should surely try Shane Watson in place of either Hopes/ Clark. Team should be chosen from these 14 with mostly choice between Gilchrist/ Haddin/ Hodge, Hopes/ Watson/ S Clark. Shaun Tait has had a dismal record in 2007 and also could not come upto the mark in the Perth test - he has to go.

Suggested Omissions: Shaun Tait
Suggested Inclusions: (Allrounder) Watson/ Hopes/ S Clark
Suggested Inclusions: (Batsmen) Haddin/ Hodge

1 RT Ponting (Aus) - certain
2 ML Hayden (Aus) - certain
3 AC Gilchrist (Aus) - certain
4 BJ Haddin (Aus)
5 A Symonds (Aus) - certain
6 BJ Hodge (Aus)
7 SR Watson (Aus)
8 MJ Clarke (Aus) - certain
9 JR Hopes (Aus)
10 B Lee (Aus) - certain
11 MEK Hussey (Aus) - certain
12 GB Hogg (Aus) - certain
13 SR Clark (Aus)
14 NW Bracken (Aus) - certain

Do give your comments on the possible team. Let us share and enjoy.
