Vineet’s ODI Most Valuable Players 2008 (all teams) Rankings are out! You can check out the ODI Most Valuable Players 2007 here

Ajantha Mendis of Sri Lanka has appeared out of nowhere to Top the MVP list of 2008! No wonders he was single handedly responsible for the destruction of India and some other teams. He made this list almost entirely on his bowling performance. He scored just 57 runs in 18 matches he played, nevertheless at an average of 19.0 at an amazing strike rate of 103.63!! But wait, while bowling he took 48 wickets in 18 matches at an average of 10.12 RPW at a strike rate of just 16.9 balls to finish with an enviable economy rate of 2.58!! He also took 3 catches. What an awesome package!! He beat the likes of Flintoff, Sehwag, Pollock, Afridi, Maharoof, Yuvraj, Kallis, and Gayle just like that!

Andrew Flintoff of England came second with an average of 50.16 at a phenomenal strike rate of 109.05 (that’s better than most batsmen) while scoring 301 runs in 11 matches he played. He took 17 wickets at an average of 21.17 RPW at a strike rate of 28.4 balls and eco rate of 4.46!! He also took 2 catches.

Virender Sehwag’s explosive batting took him to the third position. In 18 matches he played, he scored 893 runs at an average of 49.61 at a good strike rate of 120.02. He made the list entirely on his batting prowess. Nevertheless he took 8 wickets at an average of 39.5 RPW and a strike rate of 42.6 t 5.56 RPO. He also took 5 catches.

Jacob Oram of New Zealand made this list at No. 4 based on his allround performance. In 18 matches he played, he scored 319 runs at an average of 45.57 at a good strike rate of 98.76. He also took 11 wickets at an average of 28.0 RPW and a strike rate of 49.6 t 3.38 RPO. He also took 7 catches.

Shaun Pollock of South Africa is a renowned allrounder but this time made this list mainly based on his bowling performance. He took 14 wickets at an average of 15.85 strike rate of 24.5 in just 6 matches he played. Moreover he gave a miserly 3.88 RPO. He also took 7 catches and scored 43 runs at an average of 43.0 and didn’t even waste balls with a strike rate of 95.5, which also contributed a little bit towards him reaching the fifth spot.

Steve Tikolo of Kenya edged out others to get to the fifth spot by scoring 447 runs at an average of 34.38 at a strike rate of 74.62 in 19 matches he played. He took 23 wickets at an average of 25.43 RPW at a strike rate of 34.2 balls. He also took a phenomenal 23 catches. Steve Tikolo was no. 3 last year so retaining a top 5 position is commendable and it establishes him as one of the leading allrounders in one day cricket today.
